Generator Control Upgrade: Transitioning from Obsolete PLC to Easygen 3400XT

Madsen provided assistance to a customer in replacing the obsolete speed governing system on their Caterpillar 3408 gas engine, while also upgrading the generator controls from an obsolete PLC to the Woodward Easygen 3400XT on their backup generator.

  • To upgrade the engine speed control, Madsen fabricated new bracketry to elevate the PCV capture tank and created a new bracket to mount the Woodward Proact II governor. All wiring and installation were performed by Madsen.
  • Onsite, the generator controls were previously managed through a GE Fanuc PLC that had become obsolete, and the customer’s HMI had ceased to function properly. Madsen conducted the full engineering and design work, creating a new pre-wired back pan and door skin to develop a drop-in upgrade kit. By avoiding the removal of the entire panel and opting for a replacement approach, Madsen was able to accelerate the installation process and reduce costs for the customer.
  • Madsen performed all aspects of engineering, design, installation, and commissioning.
